Wired Security Systems, often referred to as a "Hard-Wired" system, utilize a main control panel which has multiple sensors connected via wiring, and typically a horn/siren for local alarm annunciation. Whenever possible, we recommend installing a wired system for many reasons. Wired systems require less maintenance over the lifetime of the system than wireless systems because there are no batteries to change in the remote sensors (door contacts, motion detectors, glass breakage detectors), and they provide more flexibility for a variety of manufacturer's sensors. They are also less susceptible to interference from other electrical signals.

The wiring for these systems can be run and concealed in a variety of ways. During new home construction, it is highly recommended that the building is "Pre-Wired" for security. This involves running all of the wiring through the ceiling space and walls so that a wired system can be easily installed at the end of construction.

Wireless systems generally consist of a control panel, keypad, siren, remote door and window sensors, as well as remote motion and glass-break sensors.

Using a wireless system is virtually the same as using a wired system. Remote sensors contain a battery that requires periodic replacement every 1-3 years, and the control panel contains a backup battery that requires replacement every 1-3 years.

We recommend installing a wired system due to the lower maintenance and a wider selection of devices, but wireless systems may often be the best option.
